The previous Real Talk posts in May and June seemed a little too serious and we thought of changing things up a little bit this month. Lest you think of us as nothing more than boring, sensible and responsible grown-ups. I can assure you, we are not.
After years of exaggerating, we decided to put an end to my endless food brags, i.e. "Jia, I can totally eat an entire cow", "Jia, I think I can eat 5kg worth of porridge", and "Jia, I feel like today's the day I eat 1000 wantons". Well, Jia has had it with my constant exaggerations and I was dying to be a competitive eater for a day. This crazy exaggeration started when I was 9 and totally obsessed with wanton dumplings. I insisted that I could easily eat 20 wanton dumplings for every meal. Thankfully, my mum is the true sensible grown-up in my life and prevented the wanton tragedy from happening. Recently, I chanced upon Kinoshita Yuka's YouTube channel and I was in awe of how a petite Japanese lady can stomach so much food. If she can eat so much, I can surely eat as much, right? Filled with inspiration and determination, I told Jia that we should challenge ourselves to eating 1000 wantons. And... she shot me down immediately. What a sport, I tell you. I was not going to give up just like that! After guilt-tripping her for having 4fingers without me, I insisted that we challenge ourselves to a fried chicken challenge. And so, we went down to the nearest 4fingers outlet with my dream of conquering at least 32 pieces each, with fries, rice boxes and salads. The aim was to wipe out the menu. After Jia's persistent vetoing of the inclusion of fries in our challenge (seriously, what a sport, I tell you), we settled on sharing 18 pieces of drumlets and wings, 1 seafood rice box, 1 tofu and mushroom salad and 2 large iced teas as a warm-up exercise. We have included the original running record of the whole experience below. The conversations, photographs and experience shared are 100% authentic, accurate and a true reflection of us. Warning: Ridiculousness and Singlish conversations below.

Sunday Stickies is a column where we reflect on the past week and pen those thoughts down on sticky pads. Expect notes to ourselves and others, advice, reminders for the week ahead, quotes, and anything random actually. What a challenging week it has been. We have always been thankful for kind and understanding clients though we know we will eventually have to cross paths with trickier clients. And most recently, we met the trickiest client yet. After weeks of managing a tight and unreasonable deadline with a brief project outline, we struggled but managed to submit our deliverables well ahead of schedule. And there was no response. All was quiet until we received an email containing a slew of harsh, unethical and unnecessary comments. What hurts the most were the groundless insults to our work professionalism and integrity of our work. We do not produce slipshod work no matter how tight a deadline is. It is against our work ethics. It comes as no surprise since integrity is one of honey&gazelle Design Studio's core values. It is perfectly fine with us if a client has issues with our designs but it kills us to be insulted beyond reason. We sincerely take pride in putting out the best work and even a simple piece of work contain layers of hard work and ideas that no one pays attention to. Despite the hard knocks, we choose to remain true to what we believe in and no amount of insults and careless words can break our passion for creating innovative, creative and beautiful paper with personality. This is the true spirit of honey&gazelle! :) Min: What do you do after a when you had a terrible, terrible day at work? After hours of ranting, venting and expelling any remaining anger and bad feelings, I usually turn to my bed for comfort and protection. My bed is my security blanket and it makes me feel safe. No matter what the crisis is, I tend to sleep better when I am safely and snuggly tucked in bed, under the covers and fluffy pillows. After this long and unfulfilling week, I have decided that all I really want to do is to climb into my bed and sleep my sorrows away. And maybe stuff my face with buckets of juicy fried chicken and some yummy fries. Jia: If you have been reading our Sunday Stickies for a while, you would know that I am a Pokemon fan. I have played all the Nintendo games with my brother and am totally anticipating - with a crazy amount of excitement - the newest instalment, Sun and Moon. However, after downloading Pokemon Go a few hours after it launched in Singapore and casually playing while working at Takashimaya, I was very disappointed over my lack of enthusiasm for the game. I realised that I much prefer the original games by far... so is that why am I not addicted to Pokemon Go?
- Have a bright week ahead! With Love, Min+Jia. It has been a while since our last printable freebie so I thought, yes, it is about time! I am always jotting down notes and writing little memos to my family and friends, which is why I always carry my battered prototype copy of Playful Pretense: Tutti Fruitti and my fast depleting Jiffy Jots Notepad: Daydream around. However, sometimes you just want a little nifty memo card to write short notes on the fly. At least, that was my situation last week when I needed to write many short messages to my friends that I felt a Jiffy Jot page was too big for. So, tadah! Here is a printable of six memo cards in two summery colours! These work fabulously for all situations, be it a note to a driver who has parked way too closely beside you or a short and sweet reminder to a friend about the week ahead. The A4-sized printable has a total of 6 memo cards laid out. To download, simply go to the Downloads section. After downloading, just print and cut the cards out. You can use any type of paper that your printer can handle. Heavy-weight paper would be good for sweet notes that your family and friends may keep, otherwise normal printing paper (100gsm and below) will do just fine! - I truly hope these printable memo cards come in handy! <3 Jia Sunday Stickies is a column where we reflect on the past week and pen those thoughts down on sticky pads. Expect notes to ourselves and others, advice, reminders for the week ahead, quotes, and anything random actually. This was a week of utter tiredness as we started on huge projects and also got ready for our pop-up stint at Takashimaya Departmental Store in Ngee Ann City. With a call time of 6am in the studio everyday and us finally calling it a day at least 18 hours later, we are so so so pooped now. Happy songs have been blaring non-stop in our studio while we work to keep us motivated and our only respite from the busyness is an impromptu dance party every now and then. However, those happy dancey moments are rare as we have been out and about all week! In very very exciting news, we have started a two week pop-up adventure with 13 other fabulous Singaporean designers at Takashimaya. If you have been wanting to check out our products in person, please do drop by the space at Basement 1, Talking Hall. We will be there everyday at whatever time we can make it, so we hope to see you there! Here are the deets, along with another upcoming pop-up art market next weekend: 4-16 August 2016 Good Things x Style Avenue Takashimaya Basement 1, Talking Hall Ngee Ann City 10am to 9.30pm 13-14 August 2016, Saturday and Sunday New Balance Run On x The Local People Lace Up Art Market School of the Arts (SOTA), Drama Theatre Foyer + Exhibition Gallery 11am to 7pm Min: August is my favourite month but this August is as crazy as crazy gets. We are practically working from 6am to midnight daily and it drives me crazy to see the sun set while I am still glued tight to my office chair and gaze transfixed on the computer screen. That is when Jia and I call upon the late night office (bad) dance moves. Bad dancing always works. I feel like I am clinging on to the pendulum of life and it is swinging furiously from one end to the other. So it is true that the lack of sleep and nutritious food can lead to a serious mental state of deliriousness and it impacts the ability to make sensible decisions. And I survived this week to tell the tale… Jia and I were at Takashimaya to set up for an event and we realised that we were trapped in the world of Narnia. I am pretty sure everyone was staring and laughing at us. We had to go through many swing doors till we found that one door that led to the way out. We were completely delirious and like the movie, ‘Inception’, I somehow feel like I am still stuck in the deepest layer of dreams. Am I even awake? Jia: I used to pride myself on being able to function 100% without much sleep. I am after all, a clinically diagnosed insomniac and am very used to pulling all nighters in a row as a student. However, very recently I discovered that ageing is real. It is like I woke up one day after 4 hours of sleep and became old. I woke up old. Old and tired with aching bones.
Min and I had an episode in Takashimaya on Wednesday when we seriously went off our rockets. We were just done setting up our pop-up booth and wanted to head back down to the staff entrance and security post to get on with the rest of the day's schedule. But, guess what? We couldn't find the right door as we were unable to remember how we even got to the pop-up location in the first place. The lack of sleep leads to short-term memory failure. And deliriousness, judging by the way we laughed hysterically and manically around the departmental store in search for that ONE door. Ah, keep us in your prayers. We are gonna need them to get through August. - Round-up of July's Sunday Stickies: 3 July // 10 July // 17 July // 24 July // 31 July - Hope you are getting enough sleep! Let us all have a great August! With Love, Min+Jia. A good friend of mine is getting married in a couple of months and I'll be helping out at the wedding. To make things a little easier on the wedding day, she requested her bridesmaids to be in blush dresses and helpers to be dressed in lighter shades of blue. Blue is such a popular colour choice at weddings thus, I am not surprised that she chose blush and blue to be her wedding colours. In fact during the earlier part of the year, Pantone paired Rose Quartz and Serenity together as the Pantone colours of the year. I really love the pairing and am excited whenever I see designs utilising these colours together. As much as I am attracted to pastel colours, I don't exactly wear them. Pastel for kitchenware and paintings are fine but pastel clothes are way too feminine for my liking. And so, my hunt for a slightly edgier shade of blue began. When I finally matched the shade of Serenity to the actual colour, I didn't think I would be this attracted to it! I had a blast searching for Serenity coloured items that I think I should get back on track to hunt for that perfect Serenity dress for the wedding. 1 // WoonHung Circus/Small Disc Wood Adjustable Necklace I love the look of this necklace! I especially love how it is made from natural and renewable materials and crafted by talented craftspeople in Cebu, Philippines. This necklace can take you through a formal work day and straight for some after work party! Versatile necklaces are the best! 2 // J.Crew Underwire One-Piece Swimsuit Swimsuits are not the most flattering piece of garment so the best choice for me is definitely a one-piece rather than a bikini. J.Crew has the most swoon-worthy swimsuits that are so good to look at and functional at the same time. And by functional, I mean, a good support system - underwire is a must. 3 // Kitchen Element Patterned Wallpaper Some people have a thing for vintage floor tiles and some are obsessed with wallpapers. I love how wallpapers can brighten and liven up a room instantaneously. Can you picture this wallpaper against a clean white kitchen with a bowl of freshly picked lemons on a countertop? 4 // Blue Lagoon, Iceland I have always wanted to visit Iceland. I can just imagine myself standing in front of the clearest of blue waters and the purest white mountains. The Blue Lagoon sounds almost like a beautiful dream to me and I am terribly envious of my friends and family who have basked in all its beauty. 5 // Smeg Refrigerator
Would you choose a blue refrigerator for your kitchen? Black, white and stainless steel are the usual colour choices for most Singaporean households and I don't remember seeing any flaming red or sunshine yellow fridges. As for me, I would really like to have this blue beauty in my future kitchen! 6 // Rose Quartz and Serenity Textured Painting I love love love how the strokes and texture complements the perfect blend of soft and dark colours on this painting. This picture was found on Pinterest but unfortunately, I can't find the artist or the name of this painting. If anyone reading this knows the creator behind this fabulous painting, do drop me a message so that I can give the artist the due credit! 7 // Kabinshop Round Ceramic Bowl Handmade ceramic bowls are my weakness and especially when they are in a lovely shade of blue. I am a ceramic bowl hoarder/collector and would love to include this in my collection! Yay to more beautiful bowls and jewelry bowls! 8 // Salen Iron Pendant Light I don't know how to appreciate lights and lamp shades but this pendant light has all my attention! While browsing the lights and dining section in Ikea, I noticed how pendant lights can add a touch of cosiness to the table without compromising on light quality during meal times. Perhaps it is time I observe how designers pair lights to enhance stunning interior designs! - How do you feel about Serenity blue? Yay or Nay? :) x Min |
